The
spectacular Atlantic Double Dunes along the shore in the Village of
East Hampton are unique in the northeast of the United States. A primary
dune and secondary dune run parallel to each other and the beach for
two and a half miles from the Maidstone Club to Atlantic Avenue in Amagansett.
The interdunal swale, the lowland of sand, beach plants, and scrub oak
between the dunes, is a paradise for hognose snakes, Fowler's toads,
cranberry bogs, and birds in migration. This gorgeous and fragile ecological
mystery, most brilliant in Autumn, is actually a fresh water wetland
on the doorstep of the Atlantic ocean. Endangered by hurricanes, the
Atlantic Double Dunes have been preserved through the efforts of conservationists.
